GFCI Update

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires GFCI receptacles to be installed in potentially wet and damp locations throughout homes, commercial buildings, schools, hospitals, public buildings and many other facilities.

All UL-Listed GFCIs manufactured after January 1, 2003 must conform to new industry-wide Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 2003 GFCI requirements.

  • If a GFCI is miswired with a line/load reversal, it is a potentially hazardous situation because the GFCI receptacle face will be live and unprotected even after the GFCI has tripped. UL now requires a diagnostic indication to help prevent line/load reversal.
  • Since electrical surges are a leading cause of GFCI failures, UL requires increased surge immunity.
  • New criteria for corrosion resistance testing will ensure that GFCIs can still operate when exposed to certain corrosive environments.
  • New requirements will also help ensure that GFCIs are more resistant to false tripping caused by "electrical noise."

Leviton SmartLock meets or exceeds these tougher requirements for surges, corrosion resistance and noise immunity. See our new product launches.

Important Reminder!

Effective January 1, 2002, any new construction, remodel of BEDROOMS or service changes are required to include arc fault protection. This would include lighting circuit breakers and smoke detector circuit breakers in BEDROOMS. As always, consult with your local wiring inspector for local interpretation. Baynes Electric Supply Co., Inc. has Cutler Hammer, Cutler Hammer BR Series and Murray arc fault circuit breakers in stock!
